The Second Largest Airline in Germany

Air Berlin GmbH and Co. Luftverkehrs KG is the second largest airline company in Germany, placing second only to Lufthansa.  With its main base at Berlin’s Tegel International Airport, Air Berlin is a low-cost airline that specializes in direct, scheduled flights.  It prides itself on its blanket coverage and has scheduled flights to fringe airports, often to holiday destinations along the Mediterranean Sea and North Africa.  It is actually the first airline to do so.  Air Berlin is also a publicly traded corporation, operating in close partnership with NIKI of Austria.

The American Roots of Air Berlin

Air Berlin GmbH and Co. Luftverkehrs KG was actually first registered as an American airline in Oregon, USA in 1978.  It was established by Kim Lundgren, who originally worked as a pilot for Pan Am.  In its early years, Air Berlin offered only charter flights, its first being from Tegel Airport to the Son Sant Joan Airport in Palma de Mallorca.  When the Cold War ended and when East and West Germany reunited in 1990, Air Berlin registered as a German company the following year and adopted the name Air Berlin GmbH and Co. Luftverkehrs KG.  In 1997, it reestablished itself as a low-cost airline.
