A Celebration of Peace
The Berlin Love Parade, considered to be the biggest techno party in the whole world, had its roots as a demonstration and a call for peace and love. The first ever Berlin Love Parade was staged around four months before the fall of the Berlin Wall. The Love Parade is the brainchild of Matthias Roeingh, more popularly known as Dr. Motte.
The Berlin Love Parade soon evolved from being a protest parade into the biggest celebration of techno, house and other forms of electronic dance music. In its heyday, the parade attracted around a million participants, dressed in body paint and sometimes nothing more and coming from outside Germany. World-famous DJs entertain the crowd aboard floats.
Endangered Future
While the Berlin Love Parade was cloned in many cities outside of Germany, the parade itself in Berlin is in danger of dying. Participation is waning due to poor marketing; the parade was actually cancelled in 2004 and 2005 due to lack of funding. It was held once more in Berlin in 2006, but without the participation of its founder, Dr. Motte. Moreover, due to disputes with the government of Berlin, the organizers have decided to take the parade outside of Berlin altogether.
